Lam Research is a leading global manufacturer of capital equipment used in making leading edge-semiconductors across the world. We primarily compete in four specific areas – deposition, etch, photoresist strip, and single wafer clean. Many years ago, Lam Research embarked on a journey to set up an Engineering center in Bangalore to expand its reach to Indian talent pool. Over two decades, this center has expanded its capability and scope beyond Engineering and is organized into three major areas of responsibility: Hardware, Software, and Operations. One of the major functional groups of this entity is LIGO (Lam India Global Operations). Within LIGO, manufacturing engineering, cost performance engineering, supply chain and logistics, spares operations and planning, order fulfilment, inventory management, and supplier QA engineering functions work collaboratively to deliver best in class solutions for Lam’s global operations.
There is an opening for the role of Technical Lead Costing Engineer for in Metal Machining domain for Cost Performance Engineering (CPE). This position is based out of Bangalore, directly reporting to the leader of CPE group within LIGO. Individual shall collaborate with all Product Groups in Lam India, US and Europe, providing leadership on should costing and design for cost solutions for metal machined parts used in semiconductor capital equipment.
Primary Responsibilities
As a key member of Cost Performance Engineering group, you will be accountable to deliver best-cost solutions to compliment new product introduction. You shall be using metal machining commodity should cost models to negotiate with suppliers in arriving best cycle time to manufacture high-quality component / assemblies. The objective is to enable cost leadership and sustained competitive advantage, maximizing the value of Lam’s new products, starting with the commodities of metal machined parts components. You will partner with Engineering, Product Management, Sourcing (Materials Program Management / MPM for new product and existing products, Supplier Business Management / SBM, Strategic Commodity Manager / SCM) and Supplier Engineering and Technology / SET).
Position will focus on realizing results through the following:
- Analyze pricing data, identify opportunities to engage with the supplier to understand their costs and partner with SCM to negotiate prices to be in-line with should-costing
- Work with onboarded supplier to discuss, align and agree on Manufacturing Methods, Cycle Time
- Use latest cost data (Material, Machine and Labor Rates) to create near perfect cost-model to empower Buyer/SBM/SCM
- Identify machining issues and provide Design for Excellence (Design for X, or DfX) input, recommending cost effective solutions for the designs.
- Acts as an enabler to drive down Cost of components/assemblies by influencing Design on Manufacturability, Costs and Technical Cost validations.
- Plan and execute vendor visits in conjunction with our SBM, MPM & SET groups to conduct research for development/validation of cost models.
- Responsible for internal prioritizing, task planning, coordination and execution day to day tasks.
In addition, you are expected to guide existing Costing Engineers and document best known methods in CPE processes.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in production / manufacturing / mechanical engineering with 8 to 10 years of experience in relevant industry
- Ability to estimate and analyze manufacturing costs – including materials, labor, overhead, and other expenses.
- Negotiation and Supplier Relationship business acumen.
- In-depth shop floor knowledge of metal machining manufacturing process and alternate manufacturing methods for high-end precision manufacturing of large, high-complex metal machined components.
- Hands-on experience in other manufacturing methods like casting, forging, extrusion, machining, EDM, bonding and joining, advanced materials and coatings, additive manufacturing.
- Demonstrated Problem Solving and Decision-Making ability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of Semiconductor / Wafer fabrication equipment industry
- In-depth knowledge of materials such as aluminum alloys, steel grades, nickel and proficient in dealing with Limit, Fit and Tolerances, GD&T, Metrology. Proficient in pre and post treatment / secondary operation (Heat treatment, Surface treatment/Coating etc.)
- Knowledge in Project Management tools (MS Project), exposure to Value Analysis / Value Engineering (VAVE) concepts and Cost Reduction ideas
- Exposure to Costing techniques & Software, and exposure to CAD applications NX, Creo

Our hybrid roles combine the benefits of on-site collaboration with colleagues and the flexibility to work remotely and fall into two categories – On-site Flex and Virtual Flex. ‘On-site Flex’ you’ll work 3+ days per week on-site at a Lam or customer/supplier location, with the opportunity to work remotely for the balance of the week. ‘Virtual Flex’ you’ll work 1-2 days per week on-site at a Lam or customer/supplier location, and remotely the rest of the time.
