Field Process Engineer


Job Description:

This position will sustain, define, develop and implement new or modified process technologies applied in the manufacturing and development of etch, deposition and clean spin clean semiconductor products in a clean room environment at customer sites.

  • Defines roadmaps to meet requirements, goals and milestones for a new technology process supporting existing processes, correcting process deviations through root cause analysis, and supporting process development experiments while using statistical process controls, data analysis techniques and test data.
  • Designs statistical experiments and analyzes results to optimize device architecture and/or process modules ensuring the identification and resolution of process and defect issues and communicating results across the organization. Deliver robust solutions to development needs in conjunction with development engineering groups.
  • Improves existing unit processes to deliver highly robust and consistent, high quality results in collaboration with various equipment maintenance and operational organizations. This will include Cost of Ownership (CoO) reductions and yield improvements.
  • Develops new or modified processes, defines best known method process recipes, and work closely with the hardware engineering team to define chamber requirements and characterize hardware designs that meet customer performance requirements.  Consistent with new product development, actively contribute to intellectual property position of the new product/processes. Coordinates process unit and process module development. Drives process and tool optimization.
  • Provides process monitoring, quality awareness, manufacturing support, process efficiency improvements, and process excursions correction while increasing equipment up time and product throughput. Interacts with Process Development Engineering, Process Integration, Production and Field Service.
  • Conceives and plans projects for all stages of process work and leads teams to success.



  • Mastery of principles and working knowledge of various plasma etch, strip, clean processes and equipment
  • Understanding and familiarity of various plasma etch, strip, clean characterization techniques including SEM, TEM, EDX, Auger, FTIR, SIMS, RBS, XPS and vacuum technology.
  • The job assignment of this particular field process engineer will be highly focused on etch tool chamber matching. Therefore, an expertise in chamber matching and extensive knowledge of Lam etch, strip, & clean hardware is highly desirable
  • Ability to utilize using (Design of Experiments) DOE methodology
    and statistical analysis is required.
  •  In-depth understanding and working knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and/or Design of Experiments (DOE).
  • Experience and understanding of high volume manufacturing and or equipment engineering is preferred.
  • Ability to work on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises good judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining desired results and addressing difficult engineering issues.
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and able to react to shifting priorities to meet business needs and deadlines
  • Must exhibit excellent organizational and people skills with demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently with diverse teams, customers, internal and external partners.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use computer applications, including data analysis tools, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to complete assignments with attention to detail and high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to perform effectively in a demanding environment with changing workloads.
  • Ability to work in constrictive clean room  attire, wearing appropriate personal protective safety equipment as required, and sit or stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to work flexible shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.  
  • Ability to work on-call during off-shift hours including weekends.
  • Excellent communication and customer relations skills.



  • Level 5 (Staff)-Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; or 9 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Level 6 (Sr. Staff)-Typically requires a minimum of 15 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; or 12 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 8 years experience; or equivalent experience.
