Field Service Engineer

Location: Hillsboro, OR


Performs on-site service and repair of Lam Etch, Clean or Deposition semiconductor processing equipment in a clean room environment at a customer site.

  • Provides preventive maintenance of equipment and attends to equipment issues. Orders and replaces defective units, components or parts where appropriate
  • Installs and/or relocates equipment and conducts associated start-up, cut over and check-out activities on the newly installed systems.
  • Performs field modifications and updates as released in Engineering Change Notifications
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems and conducts diagnostic procedures to isolate problems and take steps to minimize downtime or system interruptions and eliminate equipment malfunctions.
  • Responds to emergency service calls as required.
  • Responsible for determining corrective actions required and escalate as necessary for assistance and prompt resolution.
  • Maintains records and reports as required to properly coordinate activities with peers, supervisor(s) and customers
  • Remains current on equipment/tools through appropriate training, manuals, factory periodicals, and other relevant materials
  • Prepares and maintain accurate logs, service records, part usage documentation, diagnostic updates and other management reports
  • Accountable for maintaining assigned equipment (computer, tool kit, diagnostic test equipment, spare parts etc) in good working condition.
  • Liaise and professionally represent Lam to the customer. Utilize knowledge of company’s product lines and services to keep customers informed.
  • Committed to customer satisfaction and develops good customer relations by maintaining standards of conduct acceptable to both Lam and customers
  • Senior level engineers will have ability to train and mentor Engineers and customer employees and provide guidance to others
  • Non-exempt position.  15% travel, (some positions may require up to 80% travel in US and internationally), Willingness to work flexible shifts and extended hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.  Ability to work on-call during off-shift hours including weekends
  • Position works under the direction of a Manager or Supervisor.


  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to ten pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to fifty pounds, and occasionally team lift and/or move more than one hundred pounds
  • Ability to work in constrictive clean room attire, wearing appropriate personal protective safety equipment as required, and sit or stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to work rapidly for long periods of time when needed, including routinely bending, stooping, reaching, walking, and standing in one location
  • Ability to read and work from electrical and mechanical schematics and diagrams.
  • Ability to interpret operation manuals to determine root cause of tool failures
  • Ability to use computer applications, including data analysis tools, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to complete assignments with attention to detail and high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to perform effectively in a demanding environment with changing workloads.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers and customer and adhere to customer rules and policies regarding worksite behavior and safety.  
  • Clear and effective communication skills.


  • Requires domestic and international travel as required by changing buisness needs.
    • International travel can be for 6 to 13 weeks at a time, and can include multiple deployments.
    • Domestice Travel will be 2 to 6 weeksat a time, and can include multiple deployments


  • Level 2 typically requires an Associate’s degree in electronics, engineering, or other applicable field of study with 4-5 years relevant experience. (Bachelors Degree in Engineering or Technology preferred).  Previous experience in maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of semiconductor capital equipment, repair and/or installation of company equipment and company procedures may qualify
