Field Process Engineer (with focus on Installed base productivity and performance on Lam Research Etch Tools)


Job Description:

Domestic and International travel is required based on business needs. Currently a minimum of 35% travel to all North America customer site locations.The position will define, develop and implement new or modified processes and BKM’s to increase productivity solutions on Lam etch tools in the manufacturing of semi-conductor devices, in customer clean room facilities.

  • Communicates as a subject matter expert on high level technical issues and escalations while providing guidance and recommending solutions.
  • Defines roadmaps to meet requirements, goals and milestones for productivity solutions supporting existing processes, correcting process deviations through root cause analysis, and supporting process development experiments while using statistical process controls, data analysis techniques and test data.
  • Designs statistical experiments and analyzes results to optimize Lam installed base performance ensuring the identification and resolution of productivity issues and communicating results across the organization. Deliver robust solutions to development needs in conjunction with development engineering groups.
  • Improves existing unit processes to deliver highly robust and consistent, high quality results in collaboration with various equipment maintenance and operational organizations. This will include Cost of Ownership (CoO) reductions, yield improvements, throughput enhancements, defect reduction and chamber matching activities.
  • Develops new or modified processes, defines best known method process recipes, and work closely with the hardware engineering team to define chamber requirements and characterize hardware designs that meet customer performance requirements.  Consistent with new product development, actively contribute to intellectual property position of the new product/processes. Drives process and tool hardware optimization.
  • Provides process monitoring, quality awareness, manufacturing support, process efficiency improvements, and process excursions correction while increasing equipment up time and product throughput. Interacts with Process Development Engineering, Process Integration, Production and Field Service.
  • Conceives and plans projects for all stages of process work and leads teams to success.
  • Communicates as a subject matter expert on high level technical and productivity issues while providing guidance and recommending solutions.
  • Provides strategic technical leadership and direction by leveraging technical knowledge of Lam's products and an understanding of the customer’s long term manufacturing needs and equipment support strategy. 
  • Participates in Lam’s worldwide technical community and actively shares knowledge and takes a leadership position to enhance worldwide learning and its application.
  • Identifies and communicates opportunities for installed base performance improvements within a customer site/account through hands on and or installed based performance data collection/analysis
  • Liaises between Customers, Product Groups, Field Sales, Business Development and other organizations to ensure closure of product issues. Works closely account CSOMs and other senior level leaders in NA Field, CSBG and GPG.
  • Participates in the review of procedures, processes and tool design impacting productivity and ibase performance.
  • Mentors field engineers and designs or leads training sessions.
  • Understands how and has the capability to escalate within management when help is needed.


  • Mastery of principles and working knowledge of various dry etch processes and equipment
  • Understanding and familiarity of various film material properties and thin film characterization techniques including SEM, TEM, EDX, Auger, FTIR, SIMS, RBS, XPS and vacuum technology.
  • The job assignment of this particular field productivity engineer will be highly focused on etch tool chamber matching. Therefore, an expertise in chamber matching and extensive knowledge of Lam Kiyo and / or Flex hardware is highly desirable
  • In-depth understanding and working knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and/or Design of Experiments (DOE).
  • Experience and understanding of high volume manufacturing and or equipment engineering is preferred.
  • Ability to work on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises good judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining desired results and addressing difficult engineering issues.
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and able to react to shifting priorities to meet business needs and deadlines
  • Must exhibit excellent organizational and people skills with demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently with diverse teams, customers, internal and external partners.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use computer applications, including data analysis tools, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
  • Assist local account teams with CIP activities as it pertains to software and upgrades
  • Ability to create procedures, submit PRs and interface with engineering to have better support and design a better product
  • Ability to work directly with customers to meet their needs and expectations
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to complete assignments with attention to detail and high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to perform effectively in a demanding environment with changing workloads.
  • Ability to work in constrictive clean room attire, wearing appropriate personal protective safety equipment as required, and sit or stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Excellent communication and customer relations skills.



  • Staff-Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; or 9 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years experience; or equivalent experience.
  • Sr Staff-Typically requires a minimum of 15 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; or 12 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 8 years experience; or equivalent experience.
