The Impact You’ll Make

Join Lam as a summer 2025 Mechanical Engineering Intern and you'll be at the forefront, designing and developing electronic solutions for advanced applications. Your role involves designing and analyzing equipment, conducting experimental tests, evaluating results to create reliable cutting-edge solutions.

 

In this role, you will directly contribute to Lam’s PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) and ALD (Atomic Layer Deposition) systems engineering. Intern will work directly with experienced engineers gaining a better understanding of Lam deposition products and during their internship will be an integral member of PECVD and ALD HW Engineering Group as part of the fast paced and high energy Development group which primarily focuses on new product development. Internship will be focused on learning Lam product designs (Semiconductor Deposition products) and contributing to the overall improvement of performance and reliability through innovative solutions.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and develop mechanical systems, sub-systems, and/or solutions, applying engineering methods to design.
  • Contributes to research and development efforts by collecting and analyzing data to improve electrical system designs.
  • Assists with development of functional specifications for mechanical and electro-mechanical systems, vapor and gas delivery systems, and power delivery and distribution systems and components.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering design teams to design and modify custom and OEM system components.
  • Perform hands-on test and validation utilizing lab equipment to characterization of the performance of the mechanical and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Prepare high-quality reports and technical presentations to clearly communicate design intent, analysis, and results to diverse audiences in design reviews.
  • Design, develop and implement cost-effective solutions for small to medium scale projects.
  • Create and release engineering drawings & bill of materials using CAD and Engineering Change Management process, iPLM.
  • Develop experimental test plans and perform bench or on-tool testing including selection and setup of data acquisition equipment to characterize equipment subsystem functionality, performance reliability, design limits as well as determine overall robustness of design(s) leading to optimization of hardware performance for specific customer applications.
  • Compile/analyze and document test results in reports and presentations and share with CFT group.
  • Interact with Product Group engineering counterparts in Bangalore, India (LIGHT Engineering) and occasionally with the CEG (Component Engineering Group) for the release of OEM components/material.
  • Review and recommend corrective solutions for Problem Reports of varying complexities.
  • Identify an internship main project and conclude internship with a presentation on this project which should include knowledge gained, lessons learned, conclusions and follow-on recommendations.

Who We’re Looking For

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a Junior or Senior Undergraduate Student (Bachelors, BSME) or Postgraduate Student (Masters, MSME) in Mechanical Engineering working towards a degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Must have a broad base knowledge of mechanical engineering knowledge and a strong fundamental understanding of the scientific principles.
  • Proficient in part design of electro-mechanical components/assemblies and familiar with component manufacturing methods (sheetmetal forming, machined, welding/brazing, etc.)
  • Must have a broad base knowledge of mechanical engineering knowledge and a strong fundamental understanding of the scientific principles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in part design of electro-mechanical components/assemblies and familiar with component manufacturing methods (sheetmetal forming, machined, welding/brazing, etc.)
  • Proficient in 3D Modeling, Assembly and Detailing in any CAD packages & ability to learn other CAD application such as Creo/PRO
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
  • Experienced in leading small and medium scale projects and providing progress reports.
  • Strong fundamental understanding and demonstrated experience in applying problem solving methodologies.
  • Proficient in MSPowerPoint to adequately convey project status, engineering approach, and testing results in design reviews and cross-functional level review meetings
  • Proficient in Microsoft suite including Excel, Word, and SharePoint as well as familiarity with MS Project software.
  • Fluent in English language with strong writing and verbal communication skills.
